So we all know keeping your skin clear can be a pain, especially while traveling. Fortunately, I have a few tips and tricks to help with this!
First thing’s first- lets start with the basics.
1. H20 is my bestie!
I always drink as much water as I possibly can. Like it’s actually annoying because I have to pee every thirty minutes. Butttt it helps keep my skin way clear, and if I don’t drink enough I get really shaky because your girl loves her some mornin’ coffee.
I do have a cheeky little secret formula for my water though.
Oil of oregano + water 1-2 times per day.
You’re probably thinking “Ew Kels. That sounds disgusting!”
Yup! You’re right. This stuff tastes like sh*t. But I swear to you it is soooo worth it. One drop of this excruciatingly strong oil in your water is all you need to start killing off anything harmful inside and outside of your gorgeous little body. Oil of Oregano has so many amazing health benefits, it’s unreal, but I’m not going to sit here and explain all of them because that would literally take forever. So, I have found this article that tells you everything you want to know and why you need it in your life like yesterday.
2. I have a love affair with fruits and veggies!
You guys, I love love love fruits and vegetables. And no, I’m not going to tell you that you must be a kale-head in order to have clear skin. To be honest, I don’t even really like kale. But, I am going to tell you that the more fruits and vegetables I eat and the less junk food I eat, the clearer my skin gets. Don’t get me wrong, I love pizza and french fries, and I’m OBSESSED with chocolate. And when I want those things (which is pretty damn often), I typically eat them. But, I always try and eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible because of the obvious health benefits.
Oh, and random thought real quick, squeezing some type of citrus fruit in your water every morning is a great way to help flush out any toxins in your body. It also tastes really great, so there’s that. Oh, and if you want to get extra fancy, try squeezing the fruit in the water with the oil of oregano… It MIGHT actually help to mask that pungent taste from the oil!
3. I’m secretly obsessed with sweating!
Okay okay okay, everyone knows that daily exercise is important for your mind and body. But, a lot of people don’t know that exercising is great for your skin. When you exercise, you are creating more blood flow to the skin and when you sweat, you begin to release the toxins stored inside. So basically, sweating is a way for your body to naturally cleanse your pores, which is pretty freaking cool, but also gross to think about.
Here’s the real kicker, the endorphins your body releases when exercising also help minimize the production of cortisol in your body. Now what the heck does that mean? Cortisol is one of the hormones that helps contribute to acne, which means less breakouts! Like whaaattttttt!
Guys, sweating is good for you! A little perspiration aint ever hurt nobody. So stop being scared of it. Just make sure to wash your face immediately after so you can remove all that crap your body just poured out. And for the love of God, take off your freaking makeup beforehand!
Here is a little formula break down to make it easier to understand…
Sweat + makeup = bad skin Sweat + no makeup + washing your face after = good skin
Got it? Good!
I know I sound a little psychotic and in your face about this, but I cant stress enough how important it is to take off your makeup before exercising. Now, I understand sometimes you cant help it if you start sweating with your makeup still on. (We all know it can get hot as balls in the summer time.) But, if you know you are about to exercise just try to make sure to take it off before hand.
I’ll put it to you this way- when you sweat, all of your pores are opening up and releasing a bunch of bad crap from inside your body. So when those pores are open and you have makeup on, all of that makeup is not only blocking the bad crap from coming out, but it’s mixing together and just seeping back into your pores. Like eewwww dude! That’s disgusting right!? So yeah, hopefully you see why it’s important to exercise without makeup on.
4. Your girl loves her sleep!
Alright this point is very short and sweet. That whole “beauty rest” thing is actually real! Now, from my understanding sleep doesn’t actually play a major role in the overall clearness of your skin, but I have noticed that when I remain on a normal sleep schedule (about 8 hours per night) my skin doesn’t look as dull. And of course my dark circles aren’t nearly as prevalent.
I will say, it is hard to keep a good sleep schedule while traveling full time, but I do my best to get those 8 hours in.
5. I need the sun in my life!
Okay what!? Am I really telling you that the sun is good for your skin? Yes, I am doing just that! But take what I’m saying with a grain of salt, and don’t run off and fry yourself because you thought that’s what I’m telling you to do. No, that’s not it at all.
What I am saying is that the sun produces Vitamin D, which is amazing for clear skin. But WAIT! You should always protect your skin with sunscreen, because we all know that too much sun can cause premature wrinkles. And no body wants that!
Alright, now that that took freaking forever, lets move on to that good good. You know? The stuff I actually put on my face.
Let me just give you a quick little low down on my skin.
I have very sensitive, normal to dry skin. Fortunately, Ive never suffered from acne or horrible break outs. But that’s not to say I’ve never had them before! And not that this matters too much, but I’m olive skin-toned with a pretty decent amount of Cherokee Indian in my blood. So, I tan really easily and don’t typically burn. This is a very good thing for me because I’m actually allergic to almost all sunscreens! So it’s pretty hard for me to find one that I can actually wear.
Okay, so on with the products. FINALLY!
I have been using the Herbivore Pink Clay Soap Bar for about 6 months now and it’s by far the best cleanser I have ever used! This stuff is seriously amazing and I honestly don’t think I will ever use anything else. It is fairly inexpensive and it’s super easy to travel with since it’s just a bar of soap. I wash my face once or twice a day – at night before going to bed, and occasionally in the morning. But like I mentioned before, I always wash my face after exercising. I also like to use a wash cloth when washing at night because it helps to lightly exfoliate, but also because it ensures I’m getting everything unwanted off my face. But I NEVER apply a lot of pressure, and I’m always careful not to pull too hard on my face.
My Exfoliator/ Face Mask:
I use the Herbivore Pink Clay Exfoliating Mask about once a week. If my skin is acting particularly crazy, I’ll use the mask twice that week. But, I also have a really hard time remembering or finding time to actually use it every week. So sometimes I skip out here and there… Either way, this stuff is amazing and it lasts forever! I’ve had it for about 6 months and I cant even tell that I’ve used any of it. You only need to mix a little bit of the powder with a tiny bit of water and it creates a clay like consistency. Then you just apply it on your face, wait about 12-15 minutes, and wash it off. I always wash my face first though so the mask can do everything it needs to do. Oh, and I obviously need to mention that it comes in a very small container, which I love because it makes it easy to travel with!
My Moisturizer- Part 1:
The Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist feels amazing after washing off the clay mask. I also like to spray it on my face after applying my makeup if I’m feeling a little dry that day. This stuff definitely isn’t a necessity in my skin care routine, but I absolutely love using it! It smells wonderful, comes in the most attractive little glass spray bottle, and it feels great on my skin. (Unfortunately, the bottle it comes in is not ideal for traveling, so I just poured it into another little plastic spray bottle and it works great!)
My Moisturizer- Part 2:
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer is also another product that I don’t think I will ever switch up. This moisturizer is lightweight and dries super quick, while also providing me with enough hydration to use morning and night. It comes in a plastic bottle, making it very easy to travel with too! I also love the fact that it doesn’t have any SPF in it, because it’s surprisingly hard to find a facial moisturizer without it. But, if you are looking for a daily moisturizer with SPF try the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. I’m sure it works just as great as what I use.
My Moisturizer Part 3:
This one is going to shock most people… But, I use Neosporin on my face every night! I don’t use it everywhere though, only in the spots I really need it. If my skin is extra dry in a certain area or if I have any breakouts, I apply a tiny bit to those spots. I also have a slight case of rosacea on my cheeks and I have noticed the Neosporin has helped tremendously with it! I can absolutely tell the difference when I use it as opposed to not using it.
My Eye Cream- Part 1:
I have been using Castor Oil on my eyes every night for almost a year now and I’m obsessed! I first purchased it because I read that it can help grow eye lashes. And who doesn’t want long beautiful eye lashes? I know I do! To my surprise, it actually works! And, I have also noticed a slight decrease in the fine lines under my eyes. So that’s a plus!
My Eye Cream- Part 2:
I started using the Olay Total Effects Anti-Ageing Eye Cream about 4 months ago and I really like it. I use it everyday before applying anything else. But, I can’t honestly say that I have noticed a difference in my under eyes. I do love that it has a pale pink tint to it though, because it slightly helps to mask my dark circles. I don’t think I will buy it again, only because I don’t necessarily need it, but I would continue to use it if I were still living at home and had a budget that allowed for it haha…
So that brings us to the end of my skin care routine. Dear God that took entirely way too long… Haha sorry about that, but I do hope you guys enjoyed reading and possibly learned a thing or two! In addition to my post, I have also found this article with even more great tips for healthy skin while traveling!
